Fly your kite on Blackheath and Picnic in Greenwich Park!
Greenwich park boasts so many family-friendly attractions - it's the perfect place for a special family day out. You'll find picnic areas with panoramic views of London, beautiful flower gardens, a deer park, duck pond, and new playground, plus top 10 UK visitor attractions such as the Meridian Line, Royal Observatory, National Maritime Museum (which hosts one of the best free children's galleries we've seen) and the Cutty Sark!
Green Outdoor Space
Blackheath is only a short distance from Central London by train and it offers some of the best outdoor spaces in the city. Our Showdome will be surrounded on all sides by lots of great open space – perfect for picnics, kite flying and other outdoor activities.
Just across the road is the beautiful and historic Greenwich Park, a lovely mixture of grassy parkland, flower gardens and wild meadows. Full of great places for adventurous little ones to explore, there's also a very popular children’s playground, as well as a Wilderness Park, where you might see some of London’s famous red and fallow deer!
After exploring the park, you and your little ones could visit the landmark Royal Observatory (home of the world famous Meridian Line), to learn about the planets, stars and astronauts at the free galleries, or pop into London’s only planetarium to take a family-friendly tour of the universe.
As you pass by the Observatory, don’t forget to stop off and check out one of the city’s best views from Greenwich Hill. Boasting a fantastic view of the Thames and many of London’s landmarks (including the London Eye and St Paul's Cathedral), it makes for a perfect picnic spot, and it's well worth bringing a camera!
Heading a little further North you'll find two more of Greenwich's award winning attractions: the Cutty Sark and National Maritime Museum. Both offer lots of hands-on fun and games for the little ones, and many of their galleries and activities are free for the under 5s.
At the National Maritime Museum, you can experience the life of some of the world’s greatest explorers, with a special gallery designed for the under 7s. AHOY! is open daily, and your little ones will be able to get a taste of a life at sea – landing fish, encountering pirates and exploring the polar seas are all brought to life in a playful and interactive way, and with a buggy park and easy access to all the facilities it’s all set up for a family trip.
The nearby Cutty Sark is another of Maritime Greenwich's key landmarks, and is part of what makes this area one of the UK's Top 10 tourist attractions - all of it within walking distance of the Showdome!
Food and Drink
You'll find lots of great picnic spots throughout the park, as well as cafés at all the attractions above. Near the Observatory you'll find the beautiful Pavilion Café, which serves a range of food from snacks to main meals, ice creams and cakes. The café is perfect for family meals, with smaller portions of hot dishes and a kids lunch box selection available, not to mention fun activity sheets, high chairs, child-friendly cutlery and baby changing facilities. If you’re after something more substantial, you will find many of the high street’s favourite restaurants in the centre of Greenwich, as well as a number of very family-friendly and welcoming pubs.
